Fat Freezing vs Cavitation vs Radio Frequency: Which Body Sculpting Treatment Is Right for You?
Fat freezing, cavitation or radio frequency? How each body sculpting treatment works, what it costs in Bristol and which suits your goals.

Fat freezing, cavitation and radio frequency (RF) all help reshape the body without surgery, but each one targets a different concern. Fat freezing is usually the best fit for a stubborn pinchable bulge, cavitation suits smoothing larger areas over a course of sessions, and radio frequency is aimed at loose or crepey skin rather than fat. At Belgrave Cosmetics in Bristol, fat freezing starts from £99 and RF or cavitation from £75 per session, and many clients combine treatments for the best overall result.
This guide compares the three side by side, so you can see how each works, what it costs, how many sessions you may need and which is most likely to suit your goals.
What is the difference between fat freezing, cavitation and radio frequency?
All three are non-surgical body sculpting treatments in Bristol, with no incisions or general anaesthetic, and most people go straight back to their day afterwards. The difference is in what they target:
- Fat freezing (cryolipolysis) cools fat cells in a targeted area. Fat cells are more sensitive to cold than the surrounding tissue, and over the following weeks the body naturally clears the treated cells.
- Cavitation uses low-frequency ultrasound on the treated area to disrupt fat cells, which the body then processes over time. It is often used over a course of sessions to help smooth and contour.
- Radio frequency skin tightening gently heats the deeper layers of the skin. This encourages collagen production, which can help skin look firmer and smoother over a course of treatments.
Fat freezing vs cavitation vs RF: a quick comparison
| Fat freezing | Cavitation | Radio frequency | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Stubborn, pinchable pockets of fat | Smoothing and contouring larger areas | Loose, crepey or less firm skin |
| How it works | Controlled cooling of fat cells | Low-frequency ultrasound | Gentle heat to support collagen |
| Typical plan | One or more sessions per area | Course of six | Course of six |
| When you may see change | Gradually, most visible at around 2 to 3 months | Gradually over the course | Gradually as collagen builds |
| Price at Belgrave | From £99 (1 cup) | £75 per 45-min session, £375 for 6 | £75 per session, £375 for 6 |
Which body sculpting treatment is right for me?
The right choice depends on what bothers you most when you look in the mirror:
- "I have a stubborn bulge that won't shift." If you can pinch the area, such as lower tummy, love handles or bra fat, fat freezing is often the first treatment we suggest.
- "I want to smooth a wider area." Cavitation can work well across the stomach, thighs or bottom, particularly over a course of sessions.
- "My skin feels loose after weight loss or pregnancy." Radio frequency is designed for skin firmness rather than fat, so it suits this concern better.
- "A bit of everything." Many clients combine fat freezing with RF, or cavitation with RF, to address both fat and skin quality. Our Tummy Reset Package (six one-hour sessions, from £375) is built around exactly that.
Every plan starts with a body assessment, so we can look at the area together, take measurements and recommend the treatment, or combination, most likely to make a difference for you.
What happens at a body sculpting appointment?
- Body assessment: we talk through your goals, check your medical history and take measurements and photos so progress can be tracked.
- Your plan: we recommend the treatment, or combination, that suits the area, along with a realistic number of sessions and the cost.
- Treatment: you relax on the couch while we treat the area. Most sessions take between 30 and 60 minutes.
- Straight back to your day: most clients return to work or normal activities the same day, with simple aftercare advice.
- Review: we re-measure at follow-up visits so you can see how the area is changing over time.
Can I combine fat freezing, cavitation and RF?
Yes, and many clients do. A common approach is fat freezing to target a stubborn pocket, followed by a course of radio frequency to help the skin over the area look firmer and smoother. Cavitation and RF are also often used together across the same course. We space treatments sensibly and will only suggest a combination if it genuinely suits your goals.

How many sessions will I need?
Fat freezing is usually planned per area. Some clients are happy after one session, while others choose a second session on the same area after a few months. The number of cups depends on the size of the area: a small pocket may need one cup, while the full stomach often needs several.
Cavitation and RF work best as a course, which is why we offer both as a course of six. Sessions are usually spaced about a week apart, and changes build gradually over the course. Results vary from person to person, and your plan will be tailored to you at your assessment.
Does it hurt?
- Fat freezing: you feel pulling and intense cold for the first few minutes, which then usually goes numb. Afterwards the area can feel tender, tingly or bruised for a while.
- Cavitation: generally comfortable. Some people notice a buzzing or high-pitched sound and a warm sensation.
- Radio frequency: feels like a warm massage. We keep the heat at a comfortable level throughout.
When will I see results?
None of these treatments give an instant change, because the body needs time to respond. With fat freezing, the body gradually clears the treated fat cells, and the most visible change is usually at around two to three months. Cavitation and RF results build over the course of sessions. Many clients see a noticeable difference in how their clothes fit, but results vary and depend on your body, lifestyle and the area treated.
Who is body sculpting not suitable for?
Body sculpting is not a weight-loss treatment. It works best for people who are already close to their target weight and want to reshape specific areas. We do not recommend these treatments:
- during pregnancy or while breastfeeding
- for fat freezing, if you have cold-related conditions such as Raynaud's disease or cold urticaria
- for RF, cavitation and EMS, if you have a pacemaker or certain metal implants in the treatment area
- over broken skin, recent scars or active skin conditions
Fat freezing can cause temporary redness, numbness, tenderness or bruising, and a rare side effect called paradoxical adipose hyperplasia is discussed at your consultation. We always check your medical history before recommending a treatment.
Tips to get the most from your treatment
- Drink plenty of water and stay active, which supports your body's natural processes.
- Follow a balanced diet: body sculpting complements a healthy lifestyle rather than replacing it.
- Complete your course: cavitation and RF results build session by session.
- Take progress photos and measurements, because gradual changes can be hard to notice day to day.
- Be patient: give fat freezing two to three months before judging the result.

Radio frequency gently heats the deeper layers of the skin to support collagen production, which can help skin look firmer and smoother over a course of treatments. Many clients see an improvement in skin texture, but results vary.
